Jupiter’s rings were discovered in 1979 by the passing Voyager 1 spacecraft, but their origin was a mystery. Data from the Galileo spacecraft that orbited Jupiter from 1995 to 2003 later confirmed that these rings were created by meteoroid impacts on small nearby moons.

NASA short video about asteroids.

NASA short video about asteroids.

Enceladus, Ice Moon

The heliosphere surrounding our solar system is buffeted by strong magnetic fields, shown here as the black, diagonal, upward-pointing arrows. The heliosphere and the interstellar material of the local cloud pass by each other at a speed of 52,000 miles per hour, as shown by the blue arrow. The density of the material and the ramming pressures of the magnetic field coupled with the relatively slow speed of the heliosphere add up to indicate that there is no bow shock at the front of the heliosphere.

Subaru telescope discovers the most distant protocluster of galaxies

Using the Subaru Telescope, a team of astronomers has discovered the most distant protocluster of galaxies ever found—one that existed less than one billion years after the Big Bang.

The astronomers were able to directly observe this cluster of galaxies at an early stage in galaxy evolution, when structures were beginning to form in the early Universe. This discovery will be an important step on the way to understanding structure formation and galaxy evolution.

Although the team also investigated the properties of the galaxies in the protocluster, they did not find a significant difference between the protocluster galaxies and other galaxies in the field.

Astronomers speculate that the characteristic features of cluster galaxies in the nearby Universe occurred in later stages of cluster development, not during their birth. Close examination of the internal structure of the protocluster showed that it could consist of subgroups of galaxies, merging together to form a more massive cluster.

Above: A close-up of the central region of the protocluster. Objects circled in red are galaxies 12.7 billion light-years away.

The Center of the Omega Nebula

In the depths of the dark clouds of dust and molecular gas known as the Omega Nebula, stars continue to form. The above image from the Hubble Space Telescope’s Advanced Camera for Surveys shows exquisite detail in the famous star-forming region. The dark dust filaments that lace the center of Omega Nebula were created in the atmospheres of cool giant stars and in the debris from supernova explosions. The red and blue hues arise from glowing gas heated by the radiation of massive nearby stars.

The TCDT includes mission familiarization activities, emergency egress training, and the simulated main engine cut-off exercise. Mission STS-88 is targeted for launch on Dec. 3, 1998. It is the first U.S. flight for the assembly of the International Space Station and will carry the Unity connecting module. Unity will be mated with the already orbiting Russian-built Zarya control module. The 12-day mission includes three planned spacewalks to connect power, data and utility lines and install exterior equipment.

Space Shuttle Diagram

Space Shuttle Diagram

Path of Halley’s comet through the solar system.

Path of Halley’s comet through the solar system.

Researchers find new form of Mars lava flow.

Schematic of the heliosphere. The distribution of dark (coronal holes) and bright (active regions) features at the surface of the Sun produce an anisotropic illumination of the heliosphere. Along its polar orbit, Ulysses successively crosses regions of low (dark blue) and high (light blue) irradiances. As a result, the local in-flowing neutral He photoionization rate is variable with heliocentric latitude and over the solar cycle. This effect must be taken into account when deducing the He density in the LISM “at infinity” from GAS measurements.
